Spooky Kooky Savory Treats

By Macaroni Kid Roseville-Rocklin-Lincoln October 12, 2017

Sweet treats are great, but they need something beside sugar, even on Halloween! Here are 3 super easy, sure to please snacks. Made with either cheese or peanut butter, two kid favorites, and spooky cute, at least you'll know they are getting something beside candy on Halloween.

First up is a spooky bloodshot eye. Made from Babybel cheese with a sliced olive these are really tasty. I used a red edible pen to make the eyes look bloodshot and a little red sparkle gel to adhere the olive and fill the middle in, but you could use cream cheese (and tint it if you want) if you don't want that little hint of sweet.

Peanut butter on Ritz crackers seem to be a staple for many kids, so these spiders should be a hit. Just spread some peanut butter (or Nutella) on a cracker and add 4 pretzels on each side. Add a little peanut butter on the other cracker and put the 2 crackers together. Dab a little peanut butter on the back of the eyes and set in place. All done! It doesn't get much easier than that.

Last up is the witches broom. All you need for these is string cheese, and a pretzel for the handle. I was able to make 3 brooms from one string cheese. I cut it in thirds. Then I pulled "strings" on one end of each piece, making sure not to pull the pieces completely off (it's not difficult, just a little tedious, especially if your fingers are as big as mine). Stick a pretzel in the end of the cheese you did not "string". I found I needed to pinch the cheese around the pretzel to get it to stay in place good.

Have a Spooktacular Halloween!
